21 airlines have gone bankrupt in the last 12 months

The commercial aviation industry is in a continuous rise. Globally, there is a favorable economic environment for the development of commercial aviation, for the development of tourism and business relations between states.

According to ICAO statistics, 4.3 billion passengers flew the plane in 2018. And yet, 21 of airlines went bankrupt.

21 of airlines went bankrupt

Bankruptcy WOW Air was the latest. The Icelandic low-cost company ceased operations on 28 March 2019. Other well-known companies, which have ceased operations in recent months, were Primera Air, Germany and FlyBmi.

But Bloomberg did a "census" of the airlines, which have ceased operations in the last 12 months, and has gathered on the 21 list of air carriers.

  • Cello - established in 2009 - bankruptcy in October 2018
  • Shaheen - established in 1994 - bankruptcy in October 2018
  • Auzr Air - established in 2017 - bankruptcy in September 2018
  • Wataniya Airways - established 2017 - bankruptcy in September 2018
  • Skywork - established in 1983 - bankruptcy in August 2018
  • VLM - established in 1992 - bankruptcy in August 2018
  • OneJet - established in 2015 - bankruptcy in August 2018
  • Nextjet - established in 2002 - bankruptcy in May 2018
  • Aserca - established in 1968 - bankruptcy in May 2018
  • Saratov Airlines - established in 1931 - bankruptcy in May 2018
  • Air Arabia Jordan - established in 2015 - bankruptcy in April 2018
  • SBA Airlines - established in 1997 - bankruptcy in April 2018

As you can see, there are 21 of airlines from different corners of the world. They are companies from Europe, Asia, the Middle East or South America.

Some companies have specialized in charter flights, others have operated regular flights. Some had a history of decades, others went bankrupt within a few years of its establishment. There is no pattern of bankrupt airline companies. Everything is economically fixed.

It is a challenge for all airlines to stay on the market in a dynamic market, where the battle is focused on price.
