Update 10: 49: At the time of the landing, pilot Lee Kang-Gook was flying with 9793 flight hours on Boeing 737, 747 and Airbus A320 aircraft, including 43 hours on Boeing 777. Co-pilot was Lee Jeong-min, with 12842 flight hours, including 3220 hours on Boeing 777.

An Asiana Airlines spokesman said the pilot who was in charge of landing the aircraft had few hours flight on this type of aircraft and was for the first time in San Francisco.

About 24 hours after the unfortunate crash at the San Francisco airport, we can figure out the setting where the Boeing 777-200ER Asiana Airlines missed the landing. Everything is based on official statements, images published in the press, but also on the information in the black boxes of the plane.

The aircraft Boeing 777-200ER Asiana Airlines, what he was doing flight 214 Seoul - San Francisco and which had 307 people on board (16 crew members and 291 passengers), received approval to land on the 28L runway at San Francisco Airport. The weather was very good. It was supposed to be a normal, normal landing and nothing announced the accident. The aircraft performed well and had the technical review up to date.

Normally, the landing speed is about 137 knots (253 km / h), but the data recorded by FDR (Flight Data Recorder) (one of the black boxes) shows a much slower speed. Deborah Hersman, president of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said the plane was flying well below normal approach speed.

According to the information in CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) (one of the black boxes), 7 seconds before the impact, one of the pilots requested an increase in speed. But it wasn't enough. 4 seconds before the impact, a "Stick shaker" was activated, which also warned by the vibration of the handles that the plane was flying too slowly. 1.5 seconds before the impact, the pilot requested a go around and turned the engines to full speed, but it was too late.

Impact of the Boeing 777-200ER Asiana Airlines with the dam

The plane hit the embankment at the end of the runway, and the tail broke off. Following the impact, the landing gear also failed, and the left engine came off the wing. The body of the aircraft crawled on its belly and stopped at the left side of the runway. According to the footage shot by an amateur, the main body of the aircraft was about to turn on the ceiling.

Accident balance

According to the latest reports, 2 people died, 182 people were hospitalized and 123 escaped without injury. Of those hospitalized, there are cases of paralysis and burns, but they are alive. It was a miracle that there were no more dead people. The plane caught fire shortly after the crash.

NTSB officials said the ILS system (Instrument landing system) of the airport in San Francisco did not work on the day of the accident, it was stopped as of 1 June. Even so, the aircraft was properly equipped for landing without the aid of instruments.

Deborah Hersman said there will be a long way to go in this investigation. All the information and all the tracks will be analyzed to determine exactly the causes that led to the accident. Piloting errors are not excluded, but neither are possible aircraft failures. Similarly, ILS and PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) systems can play an important role.

At the time of landing, Lee Jeong-min, co-pilot with 12387 flight hours, including 3220 hours on Boeing 777, was at the aircraft's landing. The pilot was Lee Gang-guk with 9793 flight hours, including 43 hours on the Boeing 777.

Boeing 777 remains my favorite

If we analyze the accident from other angles, we can come to other conclusions. I think the go-around action initiated with 1.5 seconds before impact saved many lives. The plane managed to gain a little altitude and thus avoided a harder hit with the pier.

Although the accident was a violent one, involving fire on board, it resulted in two deaths, 182 injuries and 132 injuries. It could have been worse, but the evacuation was made quickly.

Boeing 777 remains a favorite. It should be noted that the fuselage of the aircraft remained intact. The tail came off immediately after the impact, the landing gear was the same, but the body of the aircraft resisted very well. I think this is the first major accident involving an 777. This model has been introduced to the operational service since 1995.

We await the completion of the investigation and the final decision.

What reduced the fire to the top of the jaw…?

Research is still being done. The point is, the impact was pretty violent. Due to the speed, the plane rose slightly from the ground and turned 360 degrees. There were sparks, engines crawling on the track…

As a personal opinion, I think the fire was started from the left engine area, more precisely when it came off the wing.

But we are officially waiting for the investigation to be completed.

As with many other aviation accidents, it is likely that most of the fault is a pilot error, a human error.

Alex, I think this will be the verdict. The plane was flying too low and too slow. Probably several minor factors led to the wrong settings…
