The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and its members continue to support governments in their efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Since the onset of the crisis, the air cargo industry has played a vital role in the fight against the new coronavirus. It has been a vital partner for the transportation of medicines, medical equipment (including spare parts / components) as needed, as well as in maintaining global supply chains.

Special cargo flights to the affected areas were organized, but cargo capacity was also used on passenger flights. Freight flights are also essential for the transportation of food and other products purchased online, supporting quarantine and social isolation policies implemented by COVID-19 affected states.

Unfortunately, travel restrictions and the suspension of tens of thousands of passenger flights also affected freight. IATA calls on governments to take urgent measures to ensure that air freight will be available to support the global fight against COVID-19.

Over 185.000 passenger flights have been canceled since the end of January, in response to government restrictions around the world. Thus, the cargo transport capacity has been greatly diminished. The global fleet of cargo aircraft has been mobilized to address this capacity shortage. Governments need to take urgent measures to ensure that vital supply lines remain open and efficient.
