The third wave on which currently crosses Cuba began in mid-December, after the reopening of airports at the end of the year. 10 of the 15 Cuban provinces are affected by the new wave of COVID-19 infections, with Havana as its epicenter.

On Tuesday, April 6, Havana reported 437 new cases of COVID-19, while raising the incidence in the last 15 days to 343.1 cases per 100 inhabitants. Restrictive measures are applied, but the desired results do not appear to be obtained.

Cuba is developing its own vaccines

Cuba is developing its own vaccines against the new coronavirus. Of these, 2 - Sovereign 2 and Abdala - are in the 3rd and final stage of clinical trials. None of these vaccines is yet authorized for emergency use or registration, which the authorities hope to achieve in June.

The Cuban government has not purchased vaccines on the international market and is not part of the Covax mechanism created under the auspices of the World Health Organization. Until then, the country's president urges the population to comply with existing measures, as well as distancing, hygiene and wearing a mask.
