The EU Health Agency points out that all EU countries / the Schengen area are severely affected by COVID-19. Romania is colored in red!

The latest update on the epidemiological situation published by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) shows that the situation of COVID-19 in the European Union and the Schengen area has worsened in the last seven days.

The recently updated maps published in support of the Council Recommendation suggest that the number of COVID-19 cases has increased in most countries, especially in Romania. Last week, five regions of Romania were colored in orange, and another two were colored in green. However, since the country has registered an increased number of new cases with the new coronavirus, now the entire territory of Romania is colored in red.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that Romania has reported 40.546 new cases in the last seven days. Given these rates, the EU Health Agency suggests that everyone, especially unvaccinated and unrecovered people, avoid making non-essential journeys, at least for now.

With the exception of Romania, ECDC revealed that the number of new cases has also increased in Sweden, Norway, Germany and Austria. Most regions of these countries were on the red list last week. However, as all of the above countries had a cumulative 19-day COVID-14 notification rate of over 500 cases, all are now classified as dark red countries.

Of all these countries, Germany reported the highest infection rates. In the last seven days, Germany has registered 364.491 new cases of infection. The country is followed by Sweden with 129.356 new cases, Austria with 67.906 new cases and Norway with 37.622 new cases in the same period.

However, European countries are more relaxed when it comes to hospitalized patients, especially in intensive care. WHO shows that Omicron is not an extremely viral strain like the other variants, but it is highly contagious. Ever since the Omicron version turned out to be a lot easier EU countries consider treating COVID-19 as a flu.

Although the number of new COVID-19 cases is increasing, more and more countries have decided to reduce the restrictions. At the same time, there are countries that have decided to shorten the quarantine period and relax the travel conditions.
