EU closes airspace for Russian planes

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said that the European Union will close its airspace to Russian airlines and private jets due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The ban was decided on Sunday by the bloc's foreign ministers. The decision is one of several actions announced by foreign ministers after their meeting in Brussels.

"We are closing down EU airspace for Russians. We propose to ban all aircraft owned by Russia, registered in Russia or controlled by Russia. These aircraft will no longer be able to land, take off or fly over EU territoryVon der Leyen told a news conference.

Prior to this decision, Germany has closed its airspace.
