The Italian government is considering imposing new COVID-19 measures, with concerns about a new wave of positive cases related to Omicron, the new COVID-19 variant. According to Bloomberg, quoted by SchengenVisaInfo.com, the Italian authorities will meet on December 23 to discuss possible new restrictions. The new package of restrictions will include: the requirement to cover the face, reduce the validity of COVID-19 certificates and impose a testing requirement on all persons wishing to attend large events, regardless of vaccination status.

"We are worried. No decision has been made yet and we will look at the number of cases, but colleagues in the UK tell us that Omicron is a challenge. We have an advantage, a lower incidence of Omicron compared to other countries, but it will not take long until it becomes the dominant strain ", Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza told Rai3.

In addition, Franco Locatelli, head of the official scientific advisory group, explained that the new option is expected to become dominant in Europe in the coming weeks, as countries have recently seen an increase in positive cases.

"The Council of Ministers, on the proposal of President Mario Draghi and Health Minister Roberto Speranza, has approved a decree-law providing for the extension of the national emergency and measures to limit the COVID-19 epidemic until March 31, 2022.", the Council announced in a press release.

In addition, last week, Italy has established new travel rules in the country. Unvaccinated people will be quarantined upon arrival. All individuals must test negative for a COVID-19 test.
