The Malta Tourism Authority has revealed that it aims to attract 1.8 million tourists this year. Such a statement from the Malta Tourism Authority comes just as the country has decided to relax its COVID-19 restrictions.
According to the Times of Malta, Malta International Airport CEO Alan Borg said he expects the country's tourism industry to reach 2015 levels. However, it is still unclear whether Malta will be able to reach 2019 levels. it is currently 35% lower.
Borg explains that other European destinations, such as Portugal, Spain, Cyprus and Croatia, have shown positive trends, suggesting that the country should attract more travelers.
Since 2 May, Malta has relaxed its travel conditions, with all passengers being able to enter Malta without having to fill in the passenger location form. At the same time, Malta no longer requires mandatory masks in public places and at events on the island.
In addition to the above, Malta has decided not to classify other countries as red or dark red. As there are no more country classifications, travelers do not need a prior travel authorization from the Superintendent of Public Health.
However, travelers should keep in mind that, despite giving up some of its rules, Malta still requires travelers to provide valid proof of COVID-19. All travelers arriving in Malta must have a vaccination, recovery or test certificate in order to be allowed to enter the country without further action.
