Norwegian Airlines is under review in Ireland and is under bankruptcy protection in Norway, the two countries where most of the airline's assets are registered, including aircraft.

In the middle of the process, norwegian seeks to avoid all financial commitments, including aircraft leases and aircraft orders to Airbus and Boeing, Reuters reported, citing sources inside the company.

The restructuring process has already led to the suspension of long-haul flights.

The restructuring process has already led to the suspension of long-haul flights which were operated using Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. As a result, the company returned 37 Boeing 787 aircraft to landlords.

The airline is trying to break its commitments to the two manufacturers. Norwegian must receive 88 aircraft from Airbus: 58 x A320neo and 30 x A321neo. Moreover, the carrier still has to receive 97 Boeing planes: 5 x 787 and 92 x 737 MAX.

The low-cost carrier sued Boeing in July 2020 for "gross negligence, fraud and breach of contract", an action related to both 737 MAX and 787 aircraft. The company canceled the order for the 97 placed aircraft to Boeing in June 2020, but data released by Boeing shows that those Norwegian orders are still active.
