Portugal has reintroduced border controls with Spain

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs that the Portuguese authorities have announced new measures on the conditions of entry into the territory of the Portuguese Republic in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new measures shall apply from 31 January 2021 at 00:00. 

Thus, according to the information publicly provided by the Portuguese authorities, all persons traveling to the Portuguese Republic by air from EU Member States or associated with the Schengen Area who have a case incidence of between 150 and 500 per 100.000 inhabitants in the last 14 days ( category in which Romania is also), must present a molecular test (type RT-PCR) with a negative result for SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, performed with a maximum of 72 hours before boarding.

At the same time, in the case of these categories of people, the Portuguese authorities recommend only travel that is essential. 

Portugal also reintroduced land and river controls on the Spanish border from the same date:

- road traffic at the land border is prohibited, regardless of the type of vehicle, with the exception of international freight transport, the transport of cross-border workers and the movement of ambulance, release and emergency vehicle vehicles;

- rail traffic (excluding freight transport) and inland waterway transport between the Portuguese Republic and the Kingdom of Spain are suspended;

- control at land and river borders has been reintroduced. 

Measures concerning the restriction of traffic at the land and river borders with the Kingdom of Spain shall not apply in the following cases:

- entry of Portuguese nationals and holders of residence permits into the Portuguese Republic;

- the movement of non-residents to the Portuguese Republic for strictly essential purposes (for example: professional activities carried out in international activities, freight transport, humanitarian travel, travel for the transport of cross-border workers and seasonal workers, with a contract of duly proven work);

- the departure of persons resident in other states.

The following authorized border crossing points are declared:

every day of the week:

  1. Valença-Viana do Castelo, exit to Ponte Tuy-Valença-connection IP 1-A 3, in Valença;
  2. Vila Verde da Raia-Chaves, exit of A 52, connection with A 24, km 0, at the roundabout;
  3. Quintanilha-Bragança, exit at Ponte Internacional IP 4 / E 82, exit junction Quintanilha or near the CCPA headquarters on N 218-1 Quintanilha;
  4. Vilar Formoso-Guarda near the border line, Largo da Fronteira, near CCPA, N 16 / E 80, link 620 Fuentes de oronoro, Spain, including access by TIR Parking, via truck, N 16, Vilar Formoso;
  5. Marvão-Portalegre, border line, Marvão, N 521 connection with Valencia de Alcântara at IC 13 Marvão;
  6. Caia-Elvas, exit on A 6, km 158, Caia-Elvas connection near the tourist point, Elvas;
