As of 1 December, Portugal is reactivating some pandemic restrictions less than two months after giving them up. Portugal is one of the few countries in Europe with a vaccination rate of over 86% of the population.

However, from December, the mask will be mandatory indoors and the EU COVID-19 digital certificate will have to be presented at the entrance to restaurants, cinemas and hotels. The digital certificate will only be valid based on the vaccine or vaccination.

In addition to the measures mentioned above, Portugal requires mandatory testing even for vaccinated people if they want to enter hospitals, nursing homes, bars, discos and if they want to participate in sporting events.

In addition, all flights to Portugal by means of a flight must show a negative result of an anti-covid test, a measure which is valid even for those who have been vaccinated. The government has also recommended frequent testing and working from home where possible.

The measures are necessary, said Prime Minister António Costa, due to the increase in the number of new cases in other EU countries. Winter is approaching, which can facilitate the appearance of respiratory infections and because families will be reunited at Christmas.

There is currently no need for a lockdown because the medical system is still facing Portugal, but we do not know what will happen in the future, given that a new strain of coronavirus with over 50 mutations has appeared.
