Ryanair plans to increase capacity this summer to 114% from 2019, as it prepares for a "very strong return" of air traffic. RYANAIR Group CEO Michael O'Leary said recent bookings have improved as a result of reduced travel restrictions, and demand is expected to continue to grow as the summer season approaches.

However, he warned that the evolution of air traffic in the first months of 2022 is slow, and RYANAIR stimulated demand by charging lower fares.

Ryanair's bookings and returns in December and January were "severely affected" by omicron travel restrictions. The average rate was only EUR 25 (USD 28), down 24% from the same quarter before COVID.

As a result, traffic in December fell to about 9,5 million passengers, and traffic in January will be between 6 and 7 million. The airline hoped to carry 11 million passengers in December 2021 and 10 million in January 2022.

However, O'Leary said Ryanair's full-year traffic forecast for March 31, 2022 remains unchanged: "just under" 100 million passengers.

Looking ahead, he added that the expansion of the fleet has given him the confidence to increase forecasts over the next five years. Ryanair has already received 41 Boeing 737 MAX 8200 aircraft and expects to receive another 24 before the summer season.

Ryanair has launched or announced 720 new routes starting in April 2021 and the opening of 15 new bases. However, the airline confirmed on January 7th closing its base with five aircraft from Frankfurt, at the end of March 2022, citing a lack of incentives.
