ACI EUROPE published 2020 Airport Industry Connectivity Report, conclusions showing the systemic collapse of aviation and air connectivity due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Published annually since 2014, these reports do not measure passenger volume, but measure how European airports and their communities are connected and accessible from the rest of the continent and the world. Uses a set of direct, indirect, and hub connectivity indexes.

This year's report highlights the harsh reality of more than 6.000 air routes previously operated by European airports, which have not yet been restored 9 months after the onset of the COVID-19 crisis.

EU / UK airports were the hardest hit, with their direct connectivity almost disappearing in April, followed by a weak recovery in the summer months reaching -55% in August. Connectivity has fallen again since September (-62%).

Among the largest airports in the EU / UK, the sharpest decreases in direct connectivity were recorded by Madrid-Barajas (-71%), Rome-Fiumicino (-70%), Munich (-68%), London-Heathrow (-68%) and Frankfurt (-67%).

Meanwhile, regional airports have been further affected, as evidenced Linz (-96%), Treviso (-95%), Vaasa (-91%), Quimper (-87%), Newquay (-86%)), Shannon (-83%) and Burgas (-82%).

In contrast, the direct connectivity of Russian and Turkish airports has proved more resilient, both because of the size and the relative dynamics of their internal market. This has led to significant losses from Moscow-Domodedovo (-12%), St. Petersburg (-26%), Moscow-Vnukovo (-28%) and Istanbul-Sabiha Gökçen (-33%).

We remind you that ACI EUROPE has announced that due to the crisis that followed COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 200 airports are in danger of going bankrupt if the number of passengers does not increase by the end of the year. ACI Europe calls on governments to financially support European airports.
