The first Sukhoi Superjet 100 with winglets flew on 21 December 2017

On 21 December 2017, the first Sukhoi Superjet 100 equipped with winglets made the first flight. Winglets are structures placed at the ends of aircraft wings. Their role is to enhance their aerodynamic qualities and reduce fuel consumption in passenger aircraft.

The flight of Sukhoi Superjet 100, which received the winglets at Zhukovsky, took 2 hours and 42 minutes. According to the test flight plan, the SCAC crew tested the stability of the aircraft and the assessment of the aircraft's management capacity in different flap configurations.

Also, different operational maneuvers were performed to determine the level of fuel consumption at different flight stages. The aircraft went up to 11000 meters.

Winglets installed on Sukhoi Superjet 100 are the result of research, engineering and experiments carried out by Sukhoi in partnership with Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI).

Peak geometry was determined by implementing innovative 3D optimization methods based on numerical computation called Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) - the TsAGI know-how used in the Russian aeronautical industry, especially for the Sukhoi Superjet 100 program.

The results of research and experiments have shown that these winglets contribute to improving take-off and landing performance, but also to reducing fuel consumption by at least 3%. Sukhoi officials estimate operating cost reductions of up to 70 000 dollars / year for each Superjet 100.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 will be certified with the winglets, these wing terminals can be mounted on new aircraft, but also on those already in operational service. They will be offered as an option for customers.

VASO (the aircraft manufacturer in Voronezh) is the manufacturer of winglets, and the materials used are certified both in Russia and abroad.
