The new KLM clip with on-board safety instructions inspired by the Delftware decoration technique

Passengers on KLM intercontinental flights will be able to watch, starting with 1 November 2015, a new clip with safety instructions on board, inspired by the Delftware decoration technique, a traditional Dutch method of decorating ceramics.

The safety instruction clip on board the KLM aircraft was built by “translating” the script into over 1000 ceramic pieces, containing hand-drawn Delftware graphics.

Initially, the script of the clip was "translated" into hand-drawn Delft Blue illustrations, which were later transformed into animated frames by a specialist and repainted in the Delft Blue style.

Subsequently, all over the 1000 animated scenes were photographed and transformed into a clip, using the stop-motion shooting technique.

The voice and movements in the movie with safety instructions on board belong to a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight attendant.

The KLM catering concept from the Economy class, "Tasty Blue", was also inspired by Dutch ceramics. Napkins, strollers, cardboard boxes and glasses on board contain Delft details or items.

Also, the Delftware boxes, which KLM offers to World Business Class passengers, are reminiscent of the same Delft Blue items. Furthermore, the WBC cutlery and the new WBC cabin interior were created by Dutch designers, and passengers are served, during the flight, with delicacies prepared by Dutch chefs.

The main source of inspiration for the creation of the film with safety instructions on board was the Royal Dutch Delftware Factory, the last factory dating from the 17th century, which produces Dutch ceramics decorated in the Delft Blue style.

The history of Delftware pottery began in the early 1600 years, when The Dutch East India vessels imported huge quantities of china from China. Later, because of the civil wars, the Dutch could no longer import Chinese porcelain and began to develop their own ceramic objects industry. Thus the Dutch industry Delftware was born.
