On March 13, 2020, a Boeing 747-400 Polar Air Cargo (N450PA) had to operate an emergency landing because the fire alarm was activated on board.

The aircraft operated flight PO717, on the route Los Angeles - Tokyo. On Friday, March 13, it took off from Los Agenels for Tokyo. He was on the flight ceiling of FL380, near Petropavlovsk (Russia), when the pilots decided to go down to FL250 because of the fire alarm, which had been triggered, and asked for approval to land in Petropavlovsk (Russia).

But due to adverse local weather conditions, they were unable to land at Petropavlovsk. The Boeing 747-400 aircraft waited for about 20 minutes, then decided to head to another airport.

The aircraft was then diverted to Shemya, a small island in the archipelago of Alaska (USA), where it landed safely about 2 and a half hours after the FL380 exit and about 90 minutes after departing from Petropavlovsk.

After a thorough inspection it was found that the alarm was false. There was no fire on board. The case was also confirmed by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration).

On the small island of Shemya there is an airport of the American Air Force, also called Eareckson Air Station. It has a runway of approximately 3000 meters, which allowed the Boeing 747-400 Polar Air Cargo to land safely. According to FlightRadar24, the plane took off from the island on March 15, with Tokyo and then Seoul.
