The Boeing 737-900ER aircraft (registered N830DN) of the American airline took off from Los Angeles on June 4, 2021 to Nashville Airport, with 162 passengers and 6 crew members on board. During the flight, a passenger rushed to the cockpit door and began hitting it, repeatedly saying "Stop this plane, stop this plane", a witness told CNN.

The remaining passengers were later picked up by an Airbus A321 aircraft of another airline, a partner in the SkyTeam alliance, and arrived in Nashville about six hours late.
Delta Air Lines said after the incident: "Thank you to the crew and passengers of Delta 386, LAX - Nashville, who helped detain a recalcitrant passenger. The plane landed safely, and police and the FBI arrested the passenger, who is now in custody. "
