On the evening of August 7, 2020, the Boeing 737-800 Air India Express was involved in a plane crash at Calicut Airport (Kozhikode).

The plane operated flight IX1344, on the route Dubai - Kozhikode. There were 184 passengers and 6 crew members on board. As a result of the plane crash, 17 people lost their lives.

But let's see the chronological thread of events. The Boeing 737-800 Air India Express (VT-AXH) took off from Dubai at 14:14. After about 4 hours, the plane was scheduled to land at Kozhikode-Calicut Airport (CCJ / VOCL). The first landing attempt resulted in a go-around, and the second attempt resulted in a tragedy.

The runway of Kozhikode-Calicut Airport (10/28) is 2850 m long. At the end of the runway there is a safety area (RESA) 93m x 90m. The required RESA length set by ICAO is 90m, while the recommended length is 240m. Unfortunately, the aircraft could not be stopped in time on the runway, leaving the runway and diving into the void from 35 meters. Which also led to the fuselage breaking into several pieces.

So far, 17 people have lost their lives as a result of the accident. Among them are the 2 pilots, information confirmed by Air India Express. At this point, rescue operations have been completed on the spot. All the victims arrived at the hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode.

The Boeing 737 (VT-AXH) Air India Express aircraft was 13 years and 9 months old. It operated its first flight on 15 November 2006. It was delivered to Air India Express on 30 November 2006. Unfortunately, he left the commercial service in pieces.

Also worth mentioning is the weather. At the time of the accident, it was raining heavily and the track was covered with water.
