Aviation accident in the Philippines: Airbus A330-200 Korean Air, off the runway!

On Sunday, October 23, 2022, a Korean Air Airbus A330-200 overshot the runway during landing at Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Philippines.

The aircraft, model Airbus A330-322 HL7525, was operating flight KE631 from Seoul (ICN) to Cebu (CEB). It appeared to be an uneventful flight from South Korea to the Philippines. Nearing its destination, the aircraft first made two unsuccessful landing attempts at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport due to bad weather.

During the third landing attempt, when weather conditions at the airport were still difficult, the aircraft ran off the runway during landing. It should be noted that the track is 3310 meters long.

Initial reports from the scene indicated no casualties, but the aircraft sustained significant damage. According to the photos, the aircraft would have hit the wings of the ILS guidance system. The landing gear was destroyed, the engines were damaged, the fuselage was damaged, and the plane came to rest with its nose in the ground. There were 176 people on board the plane, including 11 crew members and 165 passengers.
