The Maltese government has decided to dissolve the national airline Air Malta by the end of the year and will launch a new one on the Alitalia model – ITA Airways.

After the European Commission opposed a recapitalization of up to 290 million euros for the national company based at the airport Valletta-Luqa, Air Malta's executive chairman, David Curmi, announced its dissolution by the end of the year 2023, in favor of a new carrier, on the model patented by the Italians.

The new airline, whose name is unknown (the Malta Air name is already taken over by the Ryanair group): "will have its own booking platform and tickets will be sold there. The old company will continue to operate until the new company takes over. This is why we expect the transition to be mostly smooth", he said in The Times of Malta.
