On 14 July 2019, Airbus A380 Hi Fly landed in Caracas, Venezuela. It was a historic moment for Venezuela, this being the first A380 to land in it.

The Venezuelan government has sought to raise political capital on account of this aeronautical event. Venezuela is in a strong economic and political crisis, with inflation galloping from hour to hour. In a country where aviation is deteriorating from day to day and the number of flights is declining, the moment of landing of this A380 Hi Fly was presented as a success by the Caracas government.

Local authorities have tried to point out that Simón Bolívar International Airport is ready to receive the largest passenger plane in the world.

But the reality is quite different. The A380 aircraft operated based on derogations from global standards. After landing, the 1 and 4 engines were stopped in order not to suck stones, soil and other debris from the ground. The airport runway and treadmills are not wide enough for an A380.

The Airbus A380 Hi Fly aircraft also brought the tow bar. Caracas Airport does not have all the equipment necessary and suitable for A380. Boarding and disembarking of passengers is done only at the M2 door.

The Airbus A380 aircraft was leased by Estelar Latinoamerica, an air carrier specializing in charter flights. It owns 7 aircraft, including an Airbus A340-300 chartered from Hi Fly. The widebody aircraft, dedicated to long flights, is used for flights to London, Madrid, Buenos Aires.

On July 12, the Airbus A340-300 aircraft failed, and passengers from Caracas and Madrid remained through airports. In order to avoid the chaos, Estelar Latin America had to rent a plane large enough to operate the remaining flight, but also those scheduled to the Old Continent.

This is the story of the historical moment when an A380 landed in Venezuela.
