Airbus has launched a new air freight service using its unique Beluga fleet to provide freight companies and other potential customers with a solution to their large cargo needs.

The new service - Airbus Beluga Transport - will offer commercial customers in a variety of sectors, including space, energy, military, aeronautics, maritime and humanitarian, a solution to their oversized transportation needs.

The first mission took place at the end of 2021 with a delivery from the Airbus Helicopters production unit in Marignane, France, to Kobe in Japan for a customer whose identity was not disclosed. Beluga # 3 stopped to feed in Warsaw (Poland), Novosibirsk (Russia) and Seoul (Korea).

Phillippe Sabo, Head of ATI and Outbound Air Transport at Airbus, said:Beluga's wider cross-section will open up new markets and new logistics opportunities for customers. When it comes to loading helicopters - the fact that you don't have to dismantle them first - is really a plus. At the same time, it can accommodate the largest commercial aircraft engines in a fully equipped configuration. "

Built on the A300-600 platform, the five high-power BelugaST aircraft, which have so far been the backbone of Airbus transport of large sections of aircraft between work points, are now being replaced by six next-generation BelugaXLs to support increased production. Airbus airliners.

The new Airbus Beluga transport service can cover a wide range of possible applications on the market, as aircraft have the largest inland cross-section of a transport aircraft in the world, housing huge cargoes up to 7,1 m wide and 6,7 m high. .

In the near future, once Airbus launches all six new BelugaXLs, the BelugaST fleet will be handed over to a newly created subsidiary airline, which will have its own Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and staff. Philippe Sabo added: "The new airline will be flexible and agile to meet the needs of global foreign markets."

New loading techniques and equipment are being developed to maximize BelugaST's responsiveness for its target international customer base. These solutions include an automatic on-board cargo loading (OBCL) system for missions where a loading / unloading platform is not available at the airport of origin or destination.
