Boeing announced that Alaska Airlines will purchase another 23 737 MAX aircraft, based on its initial order and an agreement signed in November to purchase new 737-9s on lease.

The new order brings Alaska Airlines' total 737 MAX aircraft and options to 120 units, giving the fifth largest carrier in the US the efficiency and flexibility to expand as air travel resumes.

Alaska Airlines, a Boeing operator, supplemented the initial order of 737 MAX.

Alaska Airlines, an operator with a fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft, placed an order for 32 737-9 aircraft in 2012 as part of its fleet modernization program. 737-9 is a member of the 737 MAX family, which is designed to provide more operational efficiency, reliability and flexibility in the single-aisle aircraft market.

Last month, Alaska Airlines announced that it would lease another 13 Boeing 737-9 aircraft and sell the A320s it had purchased from Virgin America.

The new deal will add another 23 737-9 aircraft to the previous order and more options for future purchases. In total, Alaska will have 52 options that, if used, would take the carrier to 120 737 MAX aircraft.

Alaska Airlines and Boeing announced the agreement during a ceremony at the Boeing base in Seattle. Respecting the restrictions of COVID-19, both companies limited participation in the event, and in various speeches also addressed the issue of the pandemic that severely affected air travel, expressing confidence in the fundamental strength of the industry and long-term passenger demand.
