Syria's Aleppo Airport reopened to passenger air traffic after 8 years break
On February 19, 2020, a SyrianAir passenger plane landed at Aleppo Civil Airport. This was the first scheduled flight after 8 years break. Due to the war, the activity of this airport was stopped.
The airport's reopening comes just days after Russia-backed Syrian army said it confiscated rural areas northwest of Aleppo. It is a strategic gain after weeks of bombing on the last rebel bastion in northwestern Syria.

Government officials hope to resume commercial flights, which will help the economic revitalization of the region. Transport Minister Ali Hammoud said authorities are awaiting approval for resumption of international flights, with plans to reopen the route to Cairo.
The other airport in Aleppo, Nairab, is an important military base that the Syrian air force uses to strike opposition zones.
At the same time, the Syrian government forces assisted by the militias have strengthened control over the M5 motorway. It links Aleppo to Damascus, a vital trade artery in northern Syria. The highway, the fastest route between Syria's two largest cities, should be returned to civilian traffic in the next few days.
