Widebody aircraft have been leased from Air Transport Services Group (ATSG), a leasing company headquartered in Wilmington, Ohio. The deal comes at a time when Amazon is offering free shipping for millions of online orders, while also seeking to optimize their spending, have better control over deliveries, and wants to stop relying so much on intermediary partners, such as UPS and FedEx.

The contract between Amazon and Air Transport Services Group was signed on 5 years with the possibility of extension up to 7 years. The leased aircraft can carry up to 88 tonnes of cargo each.

Amazon officials have said that the new airline service will not compete with UPS and FedEx, but will be to the benefit of customers because delivery time may decrease, especially in the United States.
