American Airlines will drop the MD-80 to 2019 fleet
For American Airlines, the MD-80 aircraft fleet was the main engine on domestic and intercontinental short flights.
By 2007, American Airlines it had a fleet of over 300 aircraft McDonnell Douglas MD-80. They have operated numerous internal and intercontinental routes.
As it all comes down to money, American Airlines has started to take it out of commercial service because they are no longer economically reliable. Pratt & Whitney JT8D-200 engines are fuel efficient.

Following the announcement of the closure of St. Louis, American Airlines has also given a deadline to drop MD-80 aircraft. This will be the 2019 year.
The airline plans to finish the year 2017 with 45 of MD-80 aircraft in the fleet. In 2018, the number will decrease to 26 units.
McDonnell Douglas MD-80 American Airlines aircraft will be replaced with the new Boeing 737-800, which have low fuel consumption and can transport up to 160 seats. American currently has 300 Boeing 737-800 aircraft and orders for the 100 x Boeing 737 MAX 8.
Also, American has invested in Airbus A319 with Sharklets to complete its short-haul transport fleet.
Another large MD-80 (111) / MD-90 (62) aircraft carrier in the fleet is Delta Air Lines. He announced he would drop McDonnell Douglas stars until 2020. They will be replaced by Airbus A321, Bombardier CS100 and Boeing 737-900ER.
