On April 9 1967, the first Boeing 737 would break off the ground to operate the first flight in history. With pilots Brian Wygle and Lew Wallick at the helm, the aircraft took off from Boeing Field, Seattle and flew approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, then landed at Paine Field, Everett, Washington.

The Boeing 737 was designed for short-range flights and came to complement the 707 and 727. 737 was certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration in December 1967, after approximately 1300 flight test hours operated by a fleet of six aircraft.

For the first time, the certification included approval for the automatic approach in bad weather conditions - Category II - ceiling 100 and 1200 meters visibility.

The first Boeing 737-100 was delivered to Lufthansa, the first non-US airline to operate this type of aircraft. The aircraft was received on December 28, 1967, and the first commercial flight operated on February 10, 1968. Between 1967 and 1969, only 30 units were delivered, and the last delivered was the first product, reaching NASA's fleet for testing and training. .

Currently, the first Boeing 737-100 (N515NA) (MSN: 19437) is on display at The Museum of Flight, Seattle - Boeing Field / King County International (BFI / KBFI).

Boeing has developed the 737 series, thus reaching the most commanded aircraft in civil aviation history. At the end of March 2014, Boeing 737 had total orders for 11774 units, being delivered 7980, and 3794 being in command. The Boeing 737 family consists of the models: Original (-100, -200, -200C), Classic (-300, -400, -500), Next Generation (-600, -700, -800, -900 and -900ER) and Boeing Business Jet.
