Austrian Airlines is adapting its General Conditions of Carriage (GTC) to the new emergency ordinance adopted by the Austrian government, which will apply from 25 January 2021.

Among other things, the ordinance regulates the mandatory wearing of FFP2 masks without a valve in the means of transport. The obligation to wear masks thus applies, inter alia, on board aircraft and at all Austrian airports.

From 25 January, all passengers over the age of 14 must wear a valveless FFP2 mask (also known as a N95 or KN95 mask) on Austrian Airlines aircraft.

Passengers are asked to bring high quality protective masks themselves for the protection of themselves and others. The crew is also required to wear FFP2 masks.

Higher rated masks can also be worn, such as valveless FFP3 masks. Under the new regulation, passengers between the ages of 6 and 14 and pregnant women can travel with normal mouth-nose protection; children under the age of 6 continue to be exempted from wearing the mask.

Passengers who are unable to wear a mask for health reasons must present a negative Covid 19 test, taken no later than 48 hours before the journey, and provide a medical certificate on an Austrian Airlines form.

In principle, the risk of getting the virus during a flight is very low. Austrian Airlines aircraft are equipped with HEPA filters, which purify the cabin air from impurities such as dust, bacteria and viruses.

We remind you that Lufthansa Group air operators will require the wearing of surgical masks / FFP2 starting February 1 or earlier depending on the regulations in each country.
