Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) is no more, officially losing its airport status. The last flight was operated by Air France on November 8, 2020, which happened to be the first airline to fly to TXL in 1960. It was the long-awaited moment when the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BER) officially opened its doors.

TXL, named after Otto Lilienthal, has been Berlin's only airport for decades. The airport was opened in 1948 for military operations, not far from the city center, in the former French Quarter of West Berlin. Initially, TXL was designed to serve over 2.5 million passengers a year, but had reached over 20 million passengers annually. Due to oversaturation, the airport had become famous for delays and lost luggage.

In 1989, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) was to be doomed. The city came together and, for the first time, the idea of building a much larger airport - Berlin Brandenburg (BER) - came up. And now, after 30 years, was opened at Berlin Brandenburg International Airport "Willy Brandt" (BER).

Berlin Tegel Airport - overview

Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) has fulfilled its mission until the last day. TXL remained operational until May 4, having the status of a reserve airport. But his mission is over. OFFICIAL: Berlin Tegel Airport is gone! The demolition of Terminal C3 and the A / B and C connections, the luggage area, the VIP terminal and terminal A has started. The hexagonal terminal, classified as a historic building, will be kept in TXL.

Instead of the airport, a grandiose residential and technological project will emerge under the name: Berlin TXL - The Urban Tech Republic. Specifically, an industrial research / technology park will be built here. In addition, a vast residential neighborhood with over 9000 apartments will be built. The construction works period will be from the autumn of 2021 until 2040, when the project will be completed, informs airwaysmag.com.

Here that one of the most famous airports in Europe will be removed from the aviation map, leaving room for the residential project. This was Berlin Tegel Airport!

Personally, I have fond memories of Berlin Tegel, this being one of the first airports I flew to. I will never forget the experience of the first flight Bucharest Otopeni - Berlin Tegel via Amsterdam Schiphol, operated by KLM.
