Boeing 777-200ER (9M-MRD) Malaysia Airlines flies on a safe aisle
After of the plane crash from 17 July 2014, in which the aircraft Boeing 777-200ER (9M-MRD) Malaysia Airlines collapsed on the border between Ukraine and Russia, several voices asked: "why fly over a conflict zone?". According to safety protocols, airspace in conflict zones are closed and avoided by commercial aircraft.
In this case, according to a statement issued by EUROCONTROL, the airplane Boeing 777-200ER (9M-MRD) from flight MH17 operated on an unrestricted and safe air corridor. The flight lanes are set horizontally and vertically. In the case of Ukraine, in the eastern area, the restriction zone was active up to the ceiling 320 (32 000 of altitude feet). B777 Malaysia Airlines aircraft fly at 330 flight level (33 000 feet = 10100 meters altitude). And yet it was not a safe aisle as previously thought.
To get a better understanding of the situation, the job was pretty much the same. The upper airspace of Ukraine is divided into five Flight Information Region (FIR) regions: Kiev, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa and Simferopol. The flight is NOT transit the Dnipropetrovsk region to the east. Contact with the aircraft was lost near the border with Russia, this being dropped at 50 km from the Russian-Ukrainian border.
Although similar actions have taken place in the area, with downed military aircraft, IATA noted that the area through which Boeing 777-200ER (9M-MRD) flew Malaysia Airlines it was not subject to restrictions. This seems strange to me, especially since a similar situation happened in Crimea - the Simferopol region, in April, and ICAO and EUROCONTROL have issued warnings to airline operators that they recommend circumventing the airspace.
Currently, the airspace of Ukraine is restricted, most of the flights bypassing this area. As a result of this restriction, air traffic in Romania's airspace increased by approximately 15%. ROMATSA is prepared to cope with this increase through qualified and trained personnel for such situations.
We specify that, under normal traffic conditions, taking as an example the year 2013, the average of the aircraft for which the company provides air traffic services, for a period of 24 hours, is 2000 - 2200, during the summer and 1600 - 1800, during the period winter.
