On 28 May 2014, Boeing 787 received certification ETOPS 330 minutes of the FAA. Before I go into detail, let me define the term "ETOPS". It is an acronym that comes from "Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards", Defined by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2007. ETOPS certification only applies to aircraft with two engines, such as: Airbus A300, A310, A320, A330 and A350, Boeing 737, 757, 767, 777, 787, Embraer E-Jets and ATR 72 etc.

There are different levels of ETOPS certification, each allowing aircraft to fly on certain routes. In other words, ETOPS certification refers to the distance an aircraft can travel in an engine to the nearest airport suitable for landing. For example, a 180-minute ETOPS-certified aircraft can cover any route, but not more than 180 minutes by flight in an engine of the nearest suitable airport.

For Boeing 787, ETOPS certification of 330 minutes (5.5 hours) is very good news, which is expected by airlines. From 2011, 787 Dreamliner was certified 180 minutes ETOPS, but here's the big leap, which means better confidence in the aircraft's technical capabilities.

Being an FAA certification, the new ETOPS level will only apply to airlines in the United States. Thus, airlines can modify routes operated with Boeing 787 to save time, fuel, to streamline operational costs. We expect other international organizations, such as the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), to approve the new ETOPS level.

In these conditions, United Airlines can open the route Los Angeles - Melbourne, which will be operated with 787-9. You can operate more direct flights over the Pacific or over the North Pole. Direct flights between Australia, South Africa and South America are now possible.

To date, Boeing has received orders for 1030 from 787 Dreamliner aircraft from 60 from airlines, but has only managed to deliver 146 units to 19 customers.
