The Government of Riga has decided to ban non-essential travel in Latvia from 10 to 06 April 2021. Thus, persons arriving from the European Union, the European Economic Area, the Swiss Confederation and the United Kingdom will be able to enter Latvia only for urgent or very important purposes, such as: work, studies, family reunion, medical treatment, transit or accompanying minors, return to the place of permanent residence or participation in a funeral ceremony. Careful! Tourism is not considered an essential trip!

Important! The Latvian government has restricted the entry of holders of temporary residence permits, unless the persons concerned return to Latvia for profit.

From 15 January 2021, all persons arriving in Latvia, for the above-mentioned essential reasons, from countries considered to be at high epidemiological risk (including Romania) may enter the territory of that State provided that a Molecular PCR test with negative result for SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, performed no later than 72 hours prior to arrival in Latvia.

Operators providing passenger services are required to verify that passengers have a negative PCR-type molecular test for SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, performed no later than 72 hours prior to entry into Latvia. People who do not show the test result will not be allowed to board.

The following are accepted as evidence of a test for SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and must be submitted to companies providing passenger services, subject to refusal of boarding:

  1. documents proving a test for SARS-CoV-2 infection with a negative result;
  2. a medical letter stating that the person is not infected with the SARS-VOC-2 virus.

The test result or medical letter must be presented in English, French, Russian or in the official language of the state in which they were performed / issued.

Careful! Submission of the negative test for SARS-CoV-2 virus infection does not exclude the mandatory self-isolation measure (including for Latvian residents) for a period of 10 days after entry into Latvia. Certain categories of people (eg health and welfare workers, teachers) who are going to work in Latvia have to isolate themselves for a period of 14 days.
