The CSM Știința Baia Mare rugby team is stuck in South Africa. The flights that were supposed to bring them back home were canceled, as a result of travel bans in this country imposed by several states of the world following the detection of the Omicron variant.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that, in the context of applying the recommendations regarding the suspension of flights to the European Union, following the identification of a new variant of coronavirus in South Africa, the Romanian Embassy in Pretoria currently manages the situation of 36 Romanian citizens ( tourists, navigators and members of a sports delegation) whose flights were canceled by the airlines to which they had reservations.

The MFA informs that the Romanian Embassy in Pretoria has taken, as a matter of urgency, steps to extend the accommodation of members of the sports delegation, to ensure the necessary and, intensively, to identify alternatives for flights to the country, efforts that continue this moment.

Also, the representatives of the diplomatic mission are in contact with the local authorities for the extension of the residence visa of the Romanian citizens located on the territory of South Africa, if necessary.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Romanian Embassy in Pretoria and the Romanian Consulate General in Cape Town is in permanent dialogue with the affected Romanian citizens and local authorities and provides consular assistance, according to legal competences and in compliance with the measures adopted by the authorities of the state of residence in the pandemic. of COVID-19.
