Delta Air Lines will withdraw all MD-88 and MD-90 aircraft much earlier
Delta is restructuring its fleet and will withdraw old, less efficient aircraft. This will happen earlier than originally planned, following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Delta will withdraw the MD-88 and MD-90 aircraft before. Both types of aircraft will leave the Delta fleet in June 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Delta has parked about half of its fleet. This means that over 600 planes have been on the ground for about 2 months, including those mentioned above.
Delta was able to react quickly to the COVID-19 crisis by parking aircraft and taking into account the early withdrawals of older, less efficient aircraft.
MD-88 and MD-90 aircraft were scheduled to be withdrawn from the Delta fleet by the end of 2020. In February 2020 they were active 47 x MD-88 and 29 x MD-90. Both models flew for Delta and, much of the time, were the core of Delta.
But Delta won't stop here. It continues to assess the situation in light of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It plans to withdraw other aircraft, relying on a simplified, modern and efficient fleet.
