Domestic tourism in Italy has recovered despite the COVID-19 pandemic

Italian tourism has reached an all-time high in July and August since the beginning of the pandemic, the Italian Confederation of Trade in Crafts and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (NAC) has revealed. Such an increase in travel demand has been attributed to the implementation of the green certificate.

According to a press release issued by the NAC, in July and August 2021, approximately 23 million Italian citizens decided to spend their summer vacation in the country, raising the booking rate. The number of people who spent their holidays in the country this summer was 6 million higher than the total number of travelers in 2020. Regarding the pre-pandemic period, in 2019, the number of those who spent their holidays in Italy it was 18 million.

In terms of accommodation in Italy, traditional hotels were especially preferred by Italian tourists in July and August, with 15 million arrivals. As for other accommodation, including campsites, they recorded only 8 million arrivals. Based on these data, although large cities in Italy continue to be severely affected by the pandemic, the seaside resorts have seen the largest recovery in the tourism sector.

Green certificate has played a crucial role in the tourism and travel sector.

From September 1, EU COVID-19 digital certificate (also recognized as a green permit or Green Pass) it becomes mandatory in universities, hotels, bars and restaurants, gyms, swimming pools, stadiums, cinemas, theaters, concerts, trains, planes and ships.

As of August 6, the certificate is mandatory in Italy for all people over the age of 12, including international tourists. The Italian Green Certificate, which is an extension of the EU COVID-19 digital certificate, is issued to all persons who have been vaccinated with one of the vaccines recognized in Italy, as well as to those who have recovered from the disease.

Based on the CNA report, green certificate played a crucial role in the tourism and domestic travel sector, with the COVID-19 certificate allowing those holding one of the necessary documents to travel freely without being subject to strict restrictions.
