The European Commission came to the passengers' support and launched it application with "Passenger rights in the EU" (click to download) Special for smartphones. This is compatible with the platforms: iOS for iPhone and iPad, Google Android, RIM Blackberry and Microsoft Windows Phone 7. The application is available in 22 languages of the European Union and so far only covers air and rail transport, and will be extended in 2013 to travel by bus or coach as well as to maritime transport.

Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport, said: "How many of us didn't stay at an airport, feeling frustrated in front of someone who claimed we had no rights, even though we knew we had! With this app, millions of travelers can easily reach the right information about their passenger rights when they most need them, when unexpected situations arise. "

The experience of a trip that does not go according to plan is often stressful. Regardless of whether it is a canceled flight, the fact that the hotel within a package of tourist services does not correspond to the description or the modified timetable of a train, passengers are much easier to deal with if they know their rights.

For each potential problem, the application explains the rights of passengers. If your luggage is damaged following an accident, you may also be entitled to compensation. At the same time, it is well known that the railway and air transport companies are obliged to provide transparent information on prices and to help passengers with reduced mobility. The information is very well structured for air transport and rail transport. You can also set the Romanian language!

If you believe your rights have not been respected, the application also tells you who you should contact to file a complaint.

During a major emergency situation, as was the case during the volcanic ash crisis in Iceland from 2010, the app can also display travel information and tips made available by the European Commission.

The application is part of the Commission's campaign entitled "Your passenger rights at hand".
