The European low-cost company easyJet has celebrated 25 years of flights. It started with two Boeing 737 aircraft, and today owns 322 A320 aircraft and a vast operational network with destinations throughout Europe.

You knew that… The airline easyJet, led by Stelios Haji-Ioannou, initially operated only domestic flights in the UK?

The first easyJet flights

25 years ago, easyJet operated its first flight. It happened on November 10 and flew from London Luton Airport to Glasgow. The route to Edinburgh was also launched on November 24.

Let's not forget. The first easyJet flight was booked by telephone on October 23, 1995.

The partnership with Boeing

Initially, easyJet operated a fleet of 2 Boeing 737-200 aircraft, registered G-BECH and G-BECG. They were received on 9 and 10 November 1995 respectively.

The first Boeing 737-300 aircraft was received in April 1996. The G-EZYA aircraft was previously owned by Monarch Airlines, Canadian Airlines, but also by Euroberlin.

easyJet owned 86 Boeing 737 aircraft and 4 Boeing 757 aircraft, but followed the transit to an all-Airbus fleet.

The partnership with Airbus

In 2003, easyJet began to change its fleet and began the transition to an Airbus one. The first A319 easyJet was delivered in November 2003, one year after the signing of the agreement for the purchase of 240 A320 aircraft.

Two years later, in December 2005, the easyjet fleet numbered 100 aircraft. The threshold was reached one month after the airline turned ten.

The airline's current fleet consists of 322 aircraft with an average age of 7.5 years. The oldest aircraft was an A319, which was delivered in 2005.

Easyjet has now started receiving A320neo aircraft, which are part of an agreement with Airbus for 159 units. It was hoped that the company's fleet would reach 480 all-Airbus aircraft.

Future plans for easyJet

Given everything that is happening globally because of the new coronavirus, easyJet is not celebrating 25 years of activity as it hoped. In the midst of the pandemic, the airline was forced to close three bases in the United Kingdom this year.

However, a week ago, easyJet moved its Berlin operations to Terminal 1 at Brandenburg Airport. And from April 23, 2021, easyJet will fly daily on the route Milan Malpensa - Bucharest.
