On Sunday, October 17, 2021, the last MD-11 Lufthansa Cargo landed for the last time at Frankfurt Airport. Flight LH8161 from New York (JFK) landed ahead of schedule at 12:03 local time on runway 07R.

This landing marked the end of the commercial service of McDonnell Douglas MD-11F three-engine aircraft at Lufthansa Cargo, after more than 23 years. The D-ALCC aircraft, also the last MD-11F registered in Europe, will now be sold to an American cargo company.

Lufthansa Cargo received the first two McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft (former D-ALCA and D-ALCB registrations) in June 1998, followed by the third aircraft in August 1998 (registered D-ALCC). In total, Lufthansa Cargo operated 19 x MD-11, including the last ever manufactured (former D-ALCN registration, serial number 48806, delivered on January 25, 2001) and the last ever delivered (former D-ALCM registration, serial number 48805 , delivered February 22, 2001).

The MD-11 aircraft is 61,4 meters long, with a wingspan of 51,7 meters and a height of up to 18 meters. It has a load capacity of up to 94,7 tons, divided into 26 positions on the main deck and another 14 on the lower deck. It is powered by three General Electric CF6-80C2D1F motors, each with a standard traction of 273,57 kN. The maximum take-off weight (MTOW) is 285,99 tons, resulting in a range of 7.242 kilometers.

Since November 2013, Lufthansa Cargo has been gradually replacing MD-11F aircraft with Boeing 777 twin-engine aircraft, which are much quieter and emit less CO2.
