On 21 March 2022, a Boeing 737-800 China Eastern Airlines plane crashed in China. According to some video captures, you can see how the aircraft crashed almost vertically. It dropped from 30000ft to ground impact in less than three minutes.

There were 123 passengers and 9 crew members on board. According to authorities, there were no survivors. The black boxes of the plane, many parts of the plane and some of the bodies of those on board were recovered from the crash site.

The aircraft would have exceeded the safety speed

The international press also published the first speculations about the causes that led to the crash of the Boeing 737-800 plane, in China! We speak in the plural because there are always several causes and effects that lead to an aeronautical tragedy.

According Corriere Della Sera and Bloomberg, the aircraft would have exceeded the safety speed during the cruise flight, which would have damaged the fuselage. It is true that investigators found pieces of the aircraft 10-15 kilometers from the site of the impact with the ground. This means that those pieces came off while the aircraft was still in flight. But did they come off when the plane was at cruising altitude or was it already sinking? The theory mentioned above can be taken into account, but we better let the specialists give the verdict.

When it comes to the speed of an airplane, the situation can be confusing because there are several types of speed: ground speed and air speed. It also matters what the air speed is. The above idea can only be validated if the aircraft had a speed in the air above the safety speed.

The average speed of a commercial passenger plane is between 460 and 580 miles per hour / 400-500 knots / 800-850 kilometers per hour / Mach 0.75 - 0.85 when flying at 33000-36000 feet / 10000 - 11000 meters altitude . In general, the higher the plane, the faster it can travel.

In this case, a Boeing 737-800NG is designed to fly at a cruising speed of Mach 0.789 (455 kn; 842 km / h). It's about speed in the air, not relative to the ground. There are cases when the speed relative to the ground can increase due to the influence of high air currents, also known as jet stream.
