The group Airberlin / FlyNiki has announced the new flight and destination strategy starting with the summer of 2013. The focus will be mainly on transoceanic flights to United States of America, but also on the reorganization of the hubs from Vienna and Palma de Mallorca (I didn't know they were based in Mallorca too). We are trying to better organize the fleet and the destination network.

Future, airberlin will focus more on partnering with Etihad Airways, but also on relationships with other oneworld airlines. The goal is one that is as normal as possible, to get the most benefits from existing partnerships and alliances. Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, Chief Strategy and Network Planning Officer, said he wants to bring airberlin to the 2013 profit area.

The new strategy brings more flights to New York JFK, Los Angeles and Miami, from May 2013, but also the cancellation of flights departing from Düsseldorf to Las Vegas, San Francisco and Vancouver. From the summer of 2013, routes to Las Vegas, San Francisco will be operated in codeshare mode with American Airlines. The expansion and optimization of services from Berlin and Düsseldorf to the American Airlines hubs in New York JFK, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago are important elements in the airberlin development strategy for summer 2013, to North America.

For 2013, new strategies have been prepared for the hubs in Vienna and Palma de Mallorca. With the start of the summer season, the airberlin will increase by 12% the number of flights to Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the province and autonomous community of the Balearic Islands (Illes Balears). The German operator will operate 402 flights a week from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to the Balearic Islands. 352 flights will be operated from Germany alone, from the airports of Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich.

From the summer of 2013, therefore, passengers will be able to fly by airberlin to Barcelona, Madrid and Santiago de Compostela via Mallorca. Airberlin also intends to offer flights from Mallorca to Madrid in collaboration with its Oneworld partners. A new bilateral interline agreement with Vueling and Air Europa will enter into force in the summer of 2013 and will allow passengers to make reservations on connecting flights from Mallorca to Barcelona via the airberlin website.

The hub of Vienna is not neglected either. This is where FlyNiki, a semi-low-cost airline, a subsidiary of Airberlin, operates in particular. It will have a fleet consisting mainly of Airbus A320 aircraft, which will increase the number of seats on the flights operated. The network of routes operated in Vienna will be expanded with new holiday destinations in Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Spain.

Destinations in Eastern Europe will not be neglected either. The flights operated from Vienna to Sofia, Bucharest and Belgrade will be gradually moved to Berlin airport, starting with the summer of 2013. Thus, from next year airberlin will operate flights to 9 destinations in Eastern Europe: Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Budapest, Sofia, Bucharest. It will also fly to Riga, the capital of Latvia, in collaboration with airBaltic.

From here we conclude that FlyNiki will no longer operate the direct flight Vienna - Bucharest, from the summer of 2013, but we will have new direct flights to the German capital with airberlin. I also did some simulations. The changes will be made from April 2013 according to the websites of the two companies.

Bucharest - Vienna will be able to do via Berlin with airberlin, from April 2013, as the image below shows!

Currently, Bucharest - Berlin flights with AirBerlin / FlyNiki can only be done via Vienna, see the image below!

But from April 2013, we will have direct flights Bucharest - Berlin with airberlin, and the price seemed really attractive to me on the route I simulated!

If with 1 a year ago the capital of Germany was not connected with direct flights to Bucharest, from 2013 we will have direct flights with airberlin and Lufthansa. To Vienna, with direct flights, TAROM and Austrian Airlines will remain!
