The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revealed that air traffic is recovering, with rates in May being 83,1% higher than in 2021.

According to an IATA press release, the main cause of the increase can be attributed to the strong recovery of international travel, while domestic traffic, indicating tourists within a country, increased by only 0,2%.

Domestic traffic reached 76,7% of the levels of May 2019, while international traffic increased by 325,8% compared to 2021. In May 2022, international air traffic reached 64,1% of the levels recorded in May 2019.

The only exception to the return to travel is China, which has seen a 73,2% decrease in domestic travel compared to 2021, due to the zero-COVID policy. European airlines increased by 412,3% in May compared to 2021. Capacity increased by 221,3% and the loading factor increased by 30,1% to 80,6%. Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine had a direct impact on the region.

Despite these positive results, pre-pandemic levels are still unattainable for tour operators in Europe. Compared to 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, domestic arrivals decreased by 21% and international arrivals decreased by 42%.
