From 17 January, Greek citizens and permanent residents over the age of 60 who have not yet received their COVID vaccines will be required to pay monthly fines starting at EUR 50. The fines will double in February and will gradually increase for those who continue to refuse vaccination.

The decision comes after an increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases observed in the country, in addition to a low vaccination rate of only 67,1%, below the average vaccination administered to the entire EU / EEA population.

The decision by the Greek authorities has outraged Greek citizens. Many complain that vaccination on the basis of appointments is very difficult.

"I made an appointment on January 11 to get vaccinated, but the authorities did not find a place for me until January 31. Why didn't they give me an appointment earlier? It's not my fault, but now they say I should pay a fine. Why?" asked a Greek resident.

In addition to Greek citizens, expats of the same age are required to follow the rule, which has caused some unrest, as some expats are struggling to get vaccinated in the country, but fail because they do not have an AMKA (Insurance Registration Number). social). Others have struggled to get their vaccines recognized in Greece, as they are already vaccinated outside the EU.

This rule imposed by the authorities also affects unvaccinated medical staff. Unvaccinated health professionals have been suspended and risk losing their jobs if they are not vaccinated.
