EL AL operated the first commercial flight between Israel and Australia (LY88)
On March 24, 2020, EL AL operated the first commercial flight between Israel and Australia. It had the LY88 code.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (4X-EDI) EL AL took off from Perth, Australia, on March 24, at 20:45. After about 14 hours and after traveling 11077 kilometers, the aircraft landed in Tel Aviv, Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV). We mention that the direct flight (LY87) was operated, on the direction of Tel Aviv - Perth, only without passengers. The flight duration was 13:45 hours.
The first flight between Israel and Australia
Flight LY88 repatriated 230 Israelis before the country closed its borders. We are in full pandemic with the new COVID-19, and governments have taken extreme measures to limit the spread of the virus.
Even if the flight was operated only once, we can say that it was a commercial flight. The tickets were sold in just 15 minutes, according to reports in the Israeli press.
EL AL has long wanted to enter the Australian market and even planned to launch Tel Aviv - Melbourne. However, before officially entering the route, EL AL planned to operate a few test flights. Here is a first successful operation.
