We are starting a series of articles with tips for traveling with babies and toddlers. The first article is dedicated to travel strollers. I'm a dad to 2 girls, 4.5 years and 7 months, but that doesn't stop us from traveling. It's true that for the first 6 months, we didn't venture much into traveling with the little ones, but then we started moving around as much as we could by train, plane or car.

How to choose the best travel stroller

Whatever means of transport you choose – car, bus, train or plane – the stroller is indispensable when it comes to traveling with babies and small children. When we decide to travel, we analyze with pros and cons whether the destination is ok for children, whether we can handle our luggage, whether we can move easily with the stroller, etc.

Maya no longer sits in the stroller, which we have to take into account when we want to go to a destination worth exploring and discovering. We can't venture to walk much. Instead, Larisa sits in the stroller, and in this case we have to take into account other factors such as the maneuverability of the stroller, the space occupied and its weight. Below are some tips and recommendations on how to choose the best travel stroller.

Need a travel stroller?

Before you invest in a travel stroller, consider whether you really need one. If you generally use a large, full-featured stroller at home, then you may need a smaller, lighter stroller for these types of trips. Are you planning to travel by plane? Are you driving your own car? Consider each type of travel and mode of transport.

When it comes to travel, take into account that a stroller can get damaged during flight or train/car travel. If you have an expensive stroller and don't want to expose it to damage, then maybe it's a good idea to get a lighter and cheaper travel stroller.

When choosing a stroller for travel, to take into account the age of the child and if he can sit in the bottom, if he only has to sit on his back or maybe a folding backrest is needed. If you need a chair with a folding backrest, keep in mind that it is bulkier. Such a stroller is useful when the child falls asleep in the stroller.

Size and weight, the most important aspects to consider when getting a travel stroller

Then consider weight. The travel stroller must be light and manoeuvrable, to fit in the trunk of the car, to be easily taken on the train or plane. Also rate as its dimensions to be reduced.

A travel stroller should be easy to fold and have a carrying strap. Being easy to fold and having a carrying strap (or case) are not essential, but they are very helpful. It is much easier to use and transport a stroller if you can fold it quickly (preferably with one hand) and transport it easily.

Another useful, but not essential, aspect concerns the storage basket. It is important that you carry your valuables in your backpack, but a basket is useful if you want to put a bottle of water, something to eat, maybe some shopping that you do during your travels.

I tell you from experience that it is very important to pay more attention to the wheels too. A travel stroller may be tempting for the price, but it may not be comfortable for the baby. They are strollers with plastic wheels, solid plastic wheels with a rubber rim or silicone wheels. The plastic wheels are noisy and rigid, the child has a hard time resting if you are on the move. On the other hand, silicone or rubber wheels are comfortable while walking, they are not noisy and cushion some unevenness.

I changed 3 strollers until I found the perfect travel stroller. I hope the information provided is useful to you.
