We come with sad news! The inauguration of the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) is postponed again. It is the fourth postponement and the situation is not at all pleasant. The losses are huge, and the tensions at the political level are increasing. The head of the ecologists in the local parliament, Ramona Pop, demanded the resignation of the mayor Klaus Wowereit. The head of the BER Control Committee, Martin Delius, is also upset because the information is coming too late and not on an official channel.
The sad part is that it is not known whether BER will be inaugurated in 2014. There is little hope for 2015. The causes, as the representatives of the BER have announced, are the technical faults that appeared in the fire protection system, in the luggage transport and lighting system.
This delay in particular affects passengers and airlines. AirBerlin, the largest airline operator in the German capital, has expressed disappointment and will do its utmost to honor its services smoothly, even with expansion plans. BER will play an important role for the future of AirBerlin.
Berlin airports, Tegel and Schönefeld, work at full capacity and delays are frequent, especially in adverse weather conditions.
Berlin Brandenburg International Airport is the largest infrastructure project in Europe. BER will have a capacity of 27 of millions of passengers in the first months, their number gradually increasing to 45 of millions. It would be a real blow to the capital of Germany.
