The Istanbul New Airport project was born in 2013, with the establishment of IGA (Istanbul Grand Airport) - the authority responsible for the development and operation of the new airport for a period of 25 years. The winning group of companies is Cengiz-Kolin-Limak-Mapa-Kalyon, and the works officially started in May 2015. Istanbul New Airport is built on an area of ​​76,5 million m2, north of Istanbul, 35 km away from the city center.

Istanbul New Airport will go through 4 development phases. The first phase has been completed and will be in use starting October 29 2018. In order to solve the first phase of development of the new airport, the Turkish authorities have generated over 1.5 millions of jobs in direct and related activities.

Turkish Airlines will fly to 5 destinations from Istanbul New Airport

For starters, Turkish Airlines will be the only airline flying from Istanbul New Airport, which will operate to 5 destinations: Ankara, Antalya, Baku, Ercan and Izmir. Following that all operations will be gradually moved to 31 December 2018.

In the first phase, 3 tracks and a terminal with a capacity of 90 of millions of passengers / year will be used. Theoretically, Istanbul New Airport will be able to take over all air traffic from Istanbul's other 2 airports: Ataturk and Sabiha Gökçen.

It is no accident that IGA chose the inauguration of Istanbul New Airport on 29 October 2018, along with the Day of the Republic of Turkey. In order to publicize the inauguration of Istanbul New Airport, IGA has prepared an advertising campaign on national and social media channels.

Returning to Istanbul New Airport, it was planned to be one of the largest airports in the world. At the conclusion of the 4 development phases, Istanbul New Airport will be able to support up to 150 millions of passengers annually, but with the possibility of being upgraded to 200 millions of passengers. The codes for the new Istanbul airport are: IATA - ISL; ICAO -LTFM.

According to Turkey's General Directorate of State Airports (DHMİ), Ataturk International Airport will be closed to passenger traffic after all equipment and operations are moved to Istanbul New Airport. Theoretically, from January 1, 2019, Istanbul New Airport will become the main airport of Istanbul and will take over the IATA - IST code.

This is the summary of a great project, and its value will amount to several tens of billions of EURO.
