Paris-Charles de Gaulle, the second largest airport in Europe with over 62 million passengers in 2013, has completed 40 years of uninterrupted activity. Happy Birthday!

On 8 March 1974, the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, the former Paris Nord airport, was inaugurated. The main architect was Paul Andreu, who designed the 1 Terminal in a futuristic architecture. The main building has a circular and high form of 10 floors, this being surrounded by 7 satellite buildings with 6 gates each.

In 2003, the 2E module for Air France and SkyTeam was inaugurated, and the 2G, Lobby K, Hall L and Hall M modules were inaugurated during the 2008-2012 period. After 40 years, Paris-Charles de Gaulle has 3 large terminals, each having several secondary modules.

In 1974, Paris-Charles de Gaulle had a single track and a control tower. In 2014, the airport benefits from 4 runways and 3 control towers. Although the inauguration took place on 8 March 1974, in the presence of Prime Minister Pierre Messmer, the first overseas flight arrived on 13 March, from New York, being operated by a Boeing 747 aircraft. After this remarkable moment from 1974, another happened in 1976, when Concorde operated the first flight from this airport, and another one took place in 2006, when Airbus A380 arrived in Paris.

In 1974, the airport registered 10 millions of passengers. On the anniversary of 40, Charles de Gaulle announces traffic of approximately 62 million passengers, approximately 500 000 of aircraft movements and over 150 of airlines.

In addition to the above, Charles de Gaulle International Airport is also the main hub for Air France. In March 1974, the French carrier began moving its operational base, and in November 1974 had all operations moved to Charles de Gaulle.
