LOT Polish Airlines opens base in Budapest, flights to the United States

The Hungarian government has requested routes from Budapest to destinations in the United States. Seeking support from Alitalia, Emirtes and LOT Polish Airlines. Here, the rescue solution comes from the Polish carrier. As of May 2018, LOT will open base in Budapest and operate flights to the United States.

On July 7, 2017, LOT announced the positioning of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft at the Budapest base and the opening of 2 routes: Budapest - New York and Budapest - Chicago. This will happen starting May 3, 2018, the date of the first flight to New York.

LOT Polish Airlines opens base in Budapest

Polish officials mentioned that there is a great potential, but still untapped, on flights from Hungary to the United States. Over 165 000 passengers choose currently available variants to travel from Budapest to New York and Chicago.

From May 2018, their trips will be simpler, LOT providing direct flights after the following schedule:

Budapest - Chicago O'Hare from May 05, 2018
LO031 Budapest 11:35 - 14:50 Chicago 788 Tuesday and Saturday
LO032 Chicago 16:35 - 08:55 + 1 Budapest 788 Tuesday and Saturday

Budapest - New York JFK from May 3, 2018
LO033 Budapest 11:55 - 15:40 New York 788 Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday
LO034 New York 18:15 - 08:50 + 1 Budapest 788 Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday

What should Romania do to benefit from direct flights to the United States or Asia? Seeking help from airlines in the region or outside the EU? Let us not forget that Emirates flies from Athens to Newark (from 12 March to 2017) and from Milan to New York (from 1 to October 2013).

Coming back to LOT, we are surprised that a Dreamliner aircraft will be allocated to Budapest. If we follow the flight schedule, it will cover 2 destinations with 6 flights. Apparently, there is still room for a flight during the week. Is there anything else prepared?
