Lufthansa Group intends to expand the offer of long-haul flights from Frankfurt (FRA) at the beginning of the 2021/22 winter season. Thus, the network will include two new destinations: Montego Bay (Jamaica) and Varadero (Cuba).

The two routes will be launched starting in November. The flights will be operated by Eurowings Discover, a member airline of Lufthansa Group, which will most likely be officially launched this summer.

There will be three weekly rotations both to Montego Bay Sangster International Airport (MBJ) and to Varadero's Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (VRA). The flights will be operated with Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

A new beginning.

Lufthansa has announced plans to launch a new long-haul airline. The group's strategy is to create direct competition from charter airline Condor, which is a former Lufthansa subsidiary. The project was originally named Ocean, but was renamed Eurowings Discover in January.

Eurowings operates long-haul flights from Frankfurt to Windhoek (WDH), the main gateway to Namibia, a destination that is also part of the Brussels Airlines network. There will also be three weekly flights to Barbados (BGI), starting March 19, followed by the launch of flights to Punta Cana (PUJ) in the Dominican Republic on March 29.

The collaboration between Lufthansa and Condor will end in June.

The planned launch must coincide with the conclusion of the trade agreement between Lufthansa and Condor, through which the German flag carrier provides food for Condor's long-haul services in Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC).

The agreement will end in June this year. However, Condor lodged a complaint with the German competition control office, claiming that the decision Lufthansa Group to terminate the contract is an abuse of its dominant position.

According to data provided by the OAG Schedules Analyzer, Condor will be a direct competitor of Eurowing Discover on both routes. Condor intends to operate one weekly rotation to Montego and two weekly rotations to Varadero, in the winter season 2021/22. The flights will be performed with Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

New routes will be added.

Lufthansa has announced that starting in June, there will be a weekly rotation from Frankfuurt to Anchorage (ANC) and Las Vegas (LAS) and two weekly flights to Mauritius (MRU).

It also announced the launch in the summer of flights from Frankfurt to Male (MLE) in the Maldives, Mombasa (MBA) in Kenya and Zanzibar (ZNZ) in Tanzania. MLE and MBA will be served twice a week. For now, flights to Zanzibar are suspended.

During the summer season, Condor will operate four weekly flights to Las Vegas and Punta Cana, three weekly flights to Anchorage and two weekly rotations to Mombasa, Male, Mauritius and Windhoek.

Lufthansa and SWISS have entered into an interline agreement with South African carrier Airlink. The agreement covers more than 25 domestic destinations and 20 regional points in South Africa, including Victoria Falls, Maputo, Windhoek and Harare.
