Lufthansa will be the first airline to operate the aircraft Boeing 747-8i. The aircraft, registered under the name "D-ABYA", is scheduled to enter the German carrier's fleet around April 23, and will be scheduled to fly in May. The aircraft will be configured in 3 classes, 386 seats capacity, including the new business class.

Lufthansa ordered 20 from Boeing 747-8i aircraft, and the purpose is to replace the old Boeing 747-400 models (the first being from 1989). The aircraft will be delivered at a rate of 5 per year up to 2015. 5 aircraft from 2012, dubbed "D-ABYE", are due to arrive in Lufthansa in August.
