Lufthansa will be the first airline to operate the aircraft Boeing 747-8i. The plane, registered under the name "D-ABYA", is scheduled to enter the German operator's fleet around April 23, and will enter scheduled flights in May. The aircraft will be configured in 3 classes, capacity 386 seats, being included the new business class.

Lufthansa ordered 20 Boeing 747-8i aircraft, and the goal is to replace the old Boeing 747-400 models (the first being from 1989). The aircraft will be delivered at a rate of 5 per year by 2015. The 5th aircraft of 2012, named "D-ABYE", will arrive at Lufthansa in August.
